LEARNING
Learning is for everyone
Our Mission: To inspire an understanding and appreciation of horticulture, nature, and heritage.
“Where horticultural work can be carried out to educate and assist students, old or young, in the practical work of beautification and conservation.”
– Edward J. Grassman, August 1, 1966
Family & Youth Education
Our education program is primarily geared toward families and youth. Through our programming, we provide children with the opportunity to learn, examine, explore, and play amongst the many natural wonders the Arboretum has to offer.
Adult Education
While school-age children are our primary focus, we continue to work with and offer a variety of adult education programs and opportunities. Lectures, workshops, and symposia are conducted on horticultural topics throughout the year. Programs are listed under events.
School & Fieldtrip
Education initiatives fall into several categories covering numerous topics, including trees, woody ornamentals, geology, water ecology and soil science. An average of 4,000-5,000 public, private, and homeschooled students visit the Arboretum and participate in grade-specific programs.
Whether you are a master gardener of have yet to get your gloves dirty, this is an opportunity to gather with those who share your passion for our natural world. Books are a great way to get to know people while learning something new.

Camp Hours & Extension Care
Sapling and Oak drop-off begins at 9:00 am, and pickup extends until 4:00 pm. If you need care for your camper outside these hours, we offer before-camp care from 7:30 -9:00 am and after-camp care from 4:00-5:30 pm. The cost of extended care is $20 a week for just before or just after camp or $35 a week for both.
Summer Camp Scholarship
At Lockerly, we understand that some deserving students who would benefit from a summer camp experience simply can’t afford our camps. This year, we launched a financial aid program specifically for Sapling and Oak summer camps to ensure all members of our community have access to camp activities.
If you know of a deserving child, please see the attached application.
