Kensey will dive into the broader research of our brain on nature and how our cognitive capabilities, well-being, and body physiology can be impacted by time spent outside.

Dr. Ruthann Atchley and Dr. Paul Atchley of the University of South Florida have been researching the human brain for decades. Their recent research has investigated how creativity and empathy might be enhanced through time spent in natural settings.

Staci Catron is the Director of the Cherokee Garden Library in Atlanta. She will be discussing her latest book Seeking Eden: A Collection of Georgia’s Historic Gardens in which she follows nearly 30 historic garden spaces across their history of first designation to today alongside beautiful photographs of each landscape.

Blood Ties & Brown Liquor by Sean Hill and a selection of Latria Graham’s essays.

Join Lockerly Director of Education, Kensey Amerson, for a discussion of Sean and Latria’s writing.  We will discuss the Milledgeville-centered Blood Ties & Brown Liquor and a selection of Latria Graham’s essays.  No poetry degree required, just an interest in a creative look back at the history of Milledgeville, how we perceive the outdoors, and how we develop connections to the land.

An Evening with Latria Graham & Sean Hill

Sean Hill is a Milledgeville native and author of two books of poetry – Dangerous Goods and Blood Ties & Brown Liquor.   Sean currently lives in Missoula, Montana where he teaches creative writing at the University of Montana.

Latria Graham hails from South Carolina.  She is a regular contributor to Garden & Gun, including the article “Masters of the Green: The Black Caddies of Augusta National”. She is a creative writing professor at Augusta University. Latria was just awarded The American Mosaic Journalism Prize.

The pair of friends will tag-team the lecture, discussing their works and how the natural world inspires their writing and daily life.

An Evening with Janisse Ray

Janisse Ray is best known for her book Ecology of a Cracker Childhood, chronicling her childhood growing up in Baxley, GA, alongside the natural history of the longleaf pine. But she has authored over a dozen books, including The Woods of Fannin County and The Seed Underground. She has received the Pushcar Prize, an American Book Award, the Green Prize for Sustainable Literature Award, Nautilus Award, and Arlene Eisenberg Award for Writing that Makes a Difference. Janisse’s lecture will focus on her newest book, Journey in Place. How we come to call a place home, and weave into our identity.
